About

Lions

Early morning in the Maasai Mara, and this big fellow comes walking down the road towards the van with its roof open and we're all standing up, looking at other lions in the bush. He was about twenty feet away when I took this photograph, and he walked right past the van so close I could have put my arm out of the window and scratched his back.

After I took this photograph I sat down and said to the driver, "OK. I'm done for the day!" It was only 8 am but I was only half-joking.

Look at those massive front paws and the poise and confidence in his walk.

Below: his face is scratched and scarred. Being a lion can't be an easy way to live.

More lions

Lions sleep, or at least doze, during most the day...

...lying in the shade, stretching, yawning, rolling over, nodding off.

But when they stand up, everyone pays attention.
