Hippos

This hippo mother with her baby is standing in the shallows of the Kazinga Channel in the evening. I once saw a film, shot underwater, of hippos swimming. They were the most graceful animals, reminding me of the graceful flying hippos in Disney's Fantasia. I wonder if the artist who drew the cels for that movie had ever been swimming with hippos.

The three hippos on the bank of the Mara River (left, middle row) are about fifty feet away from a huge crocodile that was lying in the sun, probably gorged from wildebeeste that had been fording the river during their annual migration.
