About

Going home from Kikorok airstrip

We flew back to Nairobi from this airstrip in the Mara.

I was sad to leave the Mara, watching the brown savannah slide away beneath the plane. Later than night, at the Nairobi airport, walking across the ramp to my flight to London, walking through the soft, warm, moist darkness of the African night, I realized I was sad to be leaving Africa.

When the plane took off, and I looked down at the lights of the city for a few brief moments, and then for a long time at the dark continent so far below me, I knew I was very, very sad.

Outside the 'duty free shop'...

...at Kikorok airstrip.

There were thirteen of us flying, we'd booked the flight at short notice because we'd discovered the road to Nairobi was in such poor condition. When we saw all the other passengers waiting for the flight we were worried there wouldn't be enough room, but the airline sent a second plane, one specially for us.
